Service Learning
Service Learning at Elkton Middle
Service learning is a CCPS graduation requirement. Each student in grade 6, 7, 8, and 9 must complete a service project. In middle school these projects are teacher directed. Each student must complete the project in order to graduate. Our Elkton Middle School Service Learning Coordinator is Nicole Longeway. Please feel free to contact her via e-mail atnilongeway@ccps.org or by phone at 410-996-5012 if you have any questions.
6th Grade:
“The Environment and You”
This year the project is completed at North Bay Adventure Camp in North East, MD during the month of September. Students may participate in a beach clean up, an acorn collection for planting, or an action plan for “making a difference”. The students who don’t attend North Bay will complete their project at EMS. Our students learn how to be good stewards of their environment. All academic subjects (Math, Science, Social Studies, and Reading/English) participate in the completion of this project.
7th Grade:
“Food for Thought”
This project combines learning about hunger and homelessness. Last school year our students collected canned goods and dry food products which were divided and donated to the Help Center in Elkton which benefits our community. All academic subjects (Math, Science, Social Studies, and Reading/English)
8th Grade:
“Saving the Past for the Future”
Our 8th graders participate in raking leaves, picking up sticks and mulching at Elk Landing. Elk Landing is the site of the landing of British troops in the War of 1812. All academic subjects (Math, Science, Social Studies, and Reading/English) participate in the completion of this project.
Meritorious Hours:
These are hours volunteered, for a non-profit organization in the community, over and above what is required for a service project. Students who volunteer at a non-profit organization need to complete a validation form and turn it into Mrs. Longeway in the guidance office. Service learning validation forms are available in the guidance office and through the link below. Students who have earned 50 hours will be recognized at our final recognition rally and students who have accumulated 100 hours during their middle school years will earn a pin in 8th grade. All meritorious hours are to be reported to the guidance office by May 1.
Service Learning Forms:
This form is available in the guidance office or you can click the link below to print a copy.
